The water levels in the rivers of Sunamganj has increased due to heavy rains and onrush of upstream hilly waters.
Johurul Islam, executive engineer of Water Development Board, said Surma River is flowing 35 cm above its danger level following rains at Meghaloy’s Cherapunji and Sunamganj.
According to the Water Development Board 20 mm rain was recorded in Sunamganj in the last 24 hours. Besides Surma, other rivers in the district are flowing above its danger level.
Deputy Administration Jahangir Hossain said around 2,500 houses in Chhatok went under flood water. The low-lying areas in Doarabazar and Tahirpur have been flooded due to onrush of water from the upstream.
In those three upazilas, 15 metric tons of rice has been given at the rate of 5 metric tons, he added.
The flood situation in the low-lying areas and the bordering Kanaighat, Companiganj, Jaintapur and Jakiganj upazilas of Sylhet district are serious as the water levels of three rivers are flowing above danger marks.
