SI killed, 8 injured as pickup van overturns in Moulvibazar

Moulvibazar Correspondent : A police officer was killed and eight others were injured after a pickup van overturned at Rajnagar upazila in Moulvibazar district early Saturday.

The deceased was Somiron Chandra Das, a sub-inspector (SI) of Rajnagar Police Station.

Police said a pickup van, carrying policemen, turned turtle on the Sylhet-Moulvibazar regional highway in Moinar Dokan area at around 5:00 am while returning the police station after nabbing three warranted accused.

Nine people were injured in the accident.

Police and fire service personnel rescued the injured and took them to Moulvibazar Sadar Hospital where the on-duty doctor declared Somiron dead.

SI Showkat Masud Bhuiyan, constable Masuk, driver Aziz and accused Laxmann Shaotal were referred to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College in critical condition, said Moulvibazar Sadar Circle additional superintendent of police Ziaur Rahman Zia.

He said SI Solaiman, ASI Jahangir and; accused Kanto Shaotal and Moina Miah are receiving treatment at Moulvibazar Sadar Hospital.

Superintendent of Moulvibazar police Mohammad Zakaria said the pickup van overturned as the road was slippery due to rain.
