Driver killed in two ferries collision in Padma

A pick-up van driver was killed in a collision between two ferries on the Padma River early Sunday.

Another driver is still missing as he fell into the river after the accident that happened on the Shimulia-Majhirkandi ferry route at 3:45 am.

The deceased was Mohammad Khokon of Jhalakathi. He was going to Pirojpur with fish.

Driver Khokon died after being hit by a car on the ferry.

Ten persons, including children, were also injured in the accident. Eleven private cars, motorcycle and some other vehicles of the ferries were damaged due to the collision.

The ferries — Begum Rokeya and Begum Sufia Kamal — had more than 50 vehicles and more than 200 passengers on board, according to police.

The ferries collided due to the strong current in the river, according to the drivers and the passengers. The front parts of the both ferries got twisted. Both the ferries were able to anchor.
