Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has inaugurated the country’s first metro rail service– running from Uttara to Agargaon.

She opened the service at 11am on Wednesday. Sheikh Rehana, the younger sister of the prime minister, also accompanied her.

Through this, Bangladesh’s commuting system entered a new era.

People can travel from Thursday (December 29).

A train will be able to carry 200 people. The fare for a ride from Uttara to Agargaon is Tk 60 while the minimum fare will be Tk 20.

Initially, people will get the metro rail service for four hours from 8am-12pm. The train will run every 10 minutes. The metro rail will be closed every Tuesday for now.

As the government is starting the operation on a limited scale, it will take 20 minutes to travel the 11.73km distance from Uttara to Agargaon, but soon it will come down to 16-17 minutes.

Marking the occasion, the Prime Minister also unveiled a commemorative stamp and a banknote.
