Sylhet Correspondent : Mohammadpur Geneva Camp’s drug lord Sohel, known as Buniya Sohel, along with 14 members of his criminal gang, has been arrested.
On Thursday and Friday, RAB-9 and RAB-2 conducted operations in Sylhet city, Habiganj, and Brahmanbaria to apprehend them.
ASP Mashiur Rahman Sohel, Media Officer of RAB-9, shared this information with the media on Friday night.
RAB reports that Buniya Sohel has established a gang culture in the Geneva Camp, Mohammadpur, for an extended period. Conflicts over drug trafficking and territorial control often erupt between the “Chua Selim” and “Buniya Sohel” groups in the camp.
After the fall of the Awami League government on August 5, militants from both factions looted a significant amount of weapons and ammunition from the Mohammadpur and Adabar police stations.
Recently, members of both groups have been observed displaying these weapons and exchanging gunfire during several confrontations. In the past two months, five individuals have been killed and over 100 injured in these shooting incidents.
RAB reports that drug lord Buniya Sohel is facing 18 charges across various police stations in Dhaka, including murder and rape.
On Thursday night, around 3:30 AM, RAB-9 and RAB-2 conducted a joint operation in multiple locations of Sylhet, including the Dariyapara area, leading to the arrest of drug lord Sohel, also known as Buniya Sohel (30), along with Amir Hossain Hira (36), Anwar Hossain (27), Jamal Hossain (29), and Shahinur (32), who had been in hiding.
Later that day, at 2 PM, they arrested seven additional members of Buniya Sohel’s gang during an operation on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway at the Saiham Future Complex area in Madhabpur, Habiganj. The arrested individuals include Nuri Begum (30), Mithun (24), Sahil (38), Naeem (24), Azim (37), Banu Begum (50), and Sabik Hasan (20).
On Friday evening, around 5:30 PM, RAB conducted an operation in the Sadar area of Brahmanbaria, resulting in the arrest of three more members of the same gang. The arrested individuals are Amin (28), Iqbal (38), and Asif Mia (37), all residents of the Mohammadpur Geneva Camp.
RAB-9 Sylhet has transferred the detainees to RAB-2 in Dhaka.
