Iran, US clash over nuclear programme claims amid IAEA access ban

Iran and the United States have issued sharply contrasting accounts of the current state of Iran’s nuclear programme, following recent military and political developments.

In his first public statement since a ceasefire was declared, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei dismissed US claims of damaging Iran’s nuclear infrastructure. He stated that the recent American military strikes had failed to weaken the country’s nuclear capabilities and reaffirmed Iran’s commitment to continue uranium enrichment. Khamenei also criticized US President Donald Trump, describing American assertions as exaggerated and disconnected from reality.

Meanwhile, US officials maintain that their recent attacks significantly damaged Iran’s nuclear programme, claiming key infrastructure was dismantled or crippled.

The only internationally recognized body able to independently verify either side’s claims—the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)—now faces major obstacles in doing so. On Wednesday, the Iranian parliament passed legislation banning cooperation with the IAEA. The law was quickly approved by the Guardian Council, Iran’s highest legislative authority, effectively blocking international inspectors from accessing the country’s nuclear facilities.

The decision raises concerns over transparency and could further heighten tensions between Iran and the West amid ongoing uncertainty over the true status of Tehran’s nuclear activities.
