Serhou Guirassy continued his prolific scoring run to lead Borussia Dortmund to a 2-1 victory over Sergio Ramos’s Monterrey on Monday, booking their place in the Club World Cup quarter-finals.
The Guinean striker struck twice in the first half, with both goals assisted by Karim Adeyemi, giving the Bundesliga side a solid lead heading into the break at Atlanta’s air-conditioned Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Monterrey responded after the restart with a quick goal from Germán Berterame, but were unable to find a late equaliser.
Sergio Ramos, playing in a rare forward role in the dying minutes, nearly forced extra time with a stoppage-time header, but it sailed just wide, sealing Dortmund’s progress.
The German club will now face Spanish giants Real Madrid in the next round, a highly anticipated clash set up after Madrid’s earlier win over Juventus.
Guirassy’s opener came in the 14th minute following a sharp one-two with Adeyemi that left defender Jorge Rodríguez wrong-footed. Ten minutes later, he doubled Dortmund’s lead with a calm finish from the edge of the box, marking his 37th goal of the season.
Monterrey had some promising moments, including a Jesus Corona cross that hit the post and a goal from Berterame early in the second half, reacting quickest to a rebound. Another Berterame strike was ruled out for offside, while Corona had a penalty appeal denied after contact with Dortmund defender Niklas Süle.
Dortmund were less dominant after the break and saw fewer chances fall their way, with Guirassy missing the opportunity to complete a hat-trick.
In the final moments, Ramos – wearing the number 93 in homage to his dramatic 2014 Champions League final goal – was pushed forward in search of a last-minute goal. His close-range header nearly changed the outcome, but the effort drifted wide, ending Monterrey’s campaign.
The result sets up a quarter-final matchup between Dortmund and Real Madrid, where Jobe Bellingham will be forced to sit out due to suspension, missing the chance to face his older brother, Jude Bellingham.
