Youth leader and social worker Abu Talha has submitted his candidacy as an independent candidate from
Stepny ward which became vacant after a high court ruling. His nomination was endorsed by the team of
former Mayor of Tower Hamlets Lutufr Rahman. Councillor Oliur Rahman and former Councillor of Stepny
Alibor Chowdhury declared their support towards him.
Abu Talha studied International Relations & Arabic at undergraduate level and completed his post graduate
diploma in Law & Community Leadership. his education was backed by hours of youth working, political
campaigning, third sector consultancy, charity work and other, which has helped forge a strong bond with
the community.
In a press release Abu Talha mentioned that he is a local resident who has close ties with Stepney. He
grew up at his nan’s in Ashfield Street and played for a local football team, Newark Youth, for over 10
years, with Stepney Green Park being the base.
He would love the opportunity to serve the people of Stepney, as he feels he can be a strong voice for the
local people. He has a passion for helping people and feels the time is right for some young, fresh public
servants to duly deliver.
He mentioned that if elected, he would be supporting the current administration in delivering the free school
meals, MEA, university grants, more affordable housing, free social care for the elderly and much more in
creating a better future for Stepney and Tower Hamlets.
More importantly, he mentioned, He would definitely be accessible and hope to now grow a wider
representation, including young people, to voice their concerns to the council.
