Country’s first ‘stomach laparoscopic bypass surgery’

47A team of doctors here on Monday conducted the first-ever “stomach laparoscopic bypass operation” to reduce obesity.

The operation was carried out at Bangladesh-Japan Friendship Hospital (BJFH). Chairman of the hospital and eminent laparoscopic surgeon Professor Dr Sardar A Nayeem led the 10-member specialist surgery team, BSS reports.

The team included Surgeon of Bel View Hospital in India Dr Sarfaraz Jalil Beg, Bariatric Surgeon of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Dr Abul Kalam Chowdhury, Dr Sardar A Baki and Dr Mohammad Shahidullah.

Rizia Parvin, a government official who was suffering from abnormal obesity, underwent the operation at the Laparoscopic Bariatric and Metabolic Centre of the hospital.

Through the operation that took one and a half hours, the doctors said, the centre was launched at the hospital.

The 51-year-old lady’s weight increased to 120 kgs and she was unable to walk due to the obesity. “Her level of diabetes also went up to an unusual extent and she was admitted to the JBFH,” Iqbal Hossain, the husband of the woman, said.

Dr Nayeem told reporters that through this operation, the weight is controlled of those who have been suffering from overweight or obesity.

“The weight of such patients is controlled by absorption of food through cutting their stomach,” he said.

After the operation, Dr Nayeem said, the food cannot stay at the stomach for a long time as it goes to the small intestine. As a result, weight cannot increase and the patients are saved from obesity.

He also added that it’s a recognized, safe and modern treatment method which is being carried out first at the JBFH.
