The council hosted two popular events to celebrate both St George’s Day, and the Queen’s 90th birthday.
Wednesday (20 April) saw an over-50s tea dance, staged at the Arts Pavilion in Mile End Park, and compered by dance leader Tony Lane.
Suitably upbeat music was provided by Dixieland-style jazz and swing band The Sunshine Kings, who had residents stepping out onto the dance floor in style. Will Tuckley, the chief executive of Tower Hamlets dropped by.
He said: “I am pleased that these events have been arranged to enable local residents to celebrate and have a good time. The residents that I spoke to were having enjoying themselves. On behalf of Tower Hamlets Council, we would wish Her Majesty a wonderful ninetieth year.”
Festivities continued on the Saturday (23 April) when the V&A Museum of Childhood staged a day of old fashioned ‘merry-making’ paying homage to St George, England’s patron saint, and attended by more than 2,500 people.
The event featured traditional English folk music, provided by the Trad Academy, alongside the big band sounds of the Becontree Brass Band, and the vocal harmonies of the Hackney Voices Choir.
The East End Women’s Institute provided home-made refreshments for the occasion.
Feedback on the day included; “brilliant bands” and “lovely atmosphere.”
