New Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso has issued a clear message to his star-studded squad, including Vinicius Junior and Kylian Mbappe, emphasizing that all players must contribute defensively if the team is to succeed.
Speaking at a press conference ahead of Madrid’s final Group H match at the Club World Cup against RB Salzburg, Alonso stressed the importance of collective defensive effort, something he believes was lacking under former coach Carlo Ancelotti. Los Blancos ended last season without a major trophy, with Ancelotti at times frustrated by the lack of defensive commitment from his forwards.
“What I am certain of is that we need and want everyone to defend — the 11 players on the pitch have to be involved defensively,” said Alonso. “They have to get close together, they have to know how we want to press, and without that, things will be very complicated. Vini, Jude, Fede, Kylian, those up front, the defence has to push forward too.”
Alonso’s philosophy marks a shift from Ancelotti’s approach, who last season said he preferred Mbappe to focus on scoring goals rather than pressing. The French striker did just that, scoring 43 goals in his first season at the Santiago Bernabeu after joining from Paris Saint-Germain.
However, Mbappe will miss Thursday’s match in Philadelphia against Austrian side Salzburg as he continues to recover from a stomach bug. Although he returned to training on Wednesday, Alonso confirmed he would not feature.
“I was happy to see him on the pitch; it was the first day he’s got his boots back on and has been running,” said Alonso. “He’s doing well, but not enough to play tomorrow with the level that we need. He said it himself — he prefers to be ready for the last 16.”
Meanwhile, Brazilian forward Rodrygo was benched during Madrid’s 3-1 victory over Pachuca, prompting speculation about his future at the club. Alonso dismissed concerns, stating the decision was tactical and that Rodrygo remains an integral part of the squad.
“He’s doing well, he’s enthusiastic,” Alonso said. “It was a technical decision the other day, but Rodrygo is still an important player. We will need him in this Club World Cup. He’s a special player and he will have a big role at this tournament.”
