Bangladesh win 2 more medals in SAFF athletics

Bangladesh added two more bronze medals to their tally at the ongoing SAFF Athletics Championship in Ranchi, India on Sunday night.

Both medals came from the 4x400m relay events in the men’s and women’s categories.

In the men’s 4x400m relay, the Bangladeshi quartet of Masud Rana, Tareq, Nazimul Hasan Rony and Lusad Islam clocked 3 minutes 15 seconds to secure the bronze. Sri Lanka won gold with a timing of 3 minutes 5.12 seconds.

Earlier in the day, Nazimul Hasan Rony narrowly missed another medal in the men’s 400m hurdles, finishing in 51.06 seconds—the same as India’s Karna Beg. However, a photo finish placed the Indian athlete ahead, denying Rony the bronze. His later success in the relay helped ease the disappointment.

In the women’s 4x400m relay, the team of Sharifa Khatun, Barsha Khatun, Sumaiya Dewan, and Nusrat Jahan Runa clocked 3 minutes 55.63 seconds to claim bronze. Notably, Bangladesh’s multiple-time fastest woman, Shirin Akter did not participate in the 400m relay.

These results bring Bangladesh’s medal count to three bronzes in the championship. On Saturday, the men’s 4x100m relay team, led by Mohammad Ismail, had also clinched a bronze.

Once a strong contender for gold in South Asian athletics, Bangladesh’s current consolation lies in consistent bronze finishes in relay events.
