Police’s role crucial in ensuring credible election: Home Adviser

Home Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury on Monday underscored that the police will play a decisive role in ensuring the upcoming parliamentary elections are conducted in a free, fair, and impartial manner.

“All expect that the police will set a benchmark in this election — one that earns praise both at home and abroad,” he said while addressing a crime review meeting at the Hall of Pride in the Police Headquarters, Dhaka.

The adviser said the government, along with law enforcement agencies, is committed to delivering an exemplary election that strengthens public trust in the democratic process.

He urged police personnel to enforce the law with fairness, integrity, and humanity, describing them as not only protectors of law and order but also symbols of security and democratic rights.

Referring to ongoing political dialogues among parties, Jahangir Alam cautioned officers against aligning with any political group. “Remain neutral and vigilant. Do not lend support to any party,” he said.

He also directed the police to stay alert against subversive activities that could disrupt law and order, while ensuring no innocent person is harassed in the process.

Calling on senior officers to strengthen professionalism, discipline, and team spirit, the adviser said strict action must be taken against personnel who show negligence, indiscipline, or disrespect toward the state.

He also instructed police leaders to convene regular district-level core committee meetings and to expedite the disposal of false or politically motivated cases.

The Home Adviser further called for greater activity from the Special Branch (SB) and urged authorities to accelerate operations to recover illegal or lost firearms from police stations.

He stressed the need to enhance security at Key Point Installations (KPIs) and raise vigilance against rising fire incidents.

“Attacks on the police will not be tolerated under any circumstances,” Jahangir warned, directing immediate legal action in such cases.

Addressing the growing threat of cybercrime, he urged young officers to take a proactive role in combating digital offenses and protecting citizens online.

The meeting, chaired by Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam, was attended by DIGs of different ranges, metropolitan police commissioners, and district superintendents, who discussed field-level challenges and received guidance from the adviser.
