Most buildings in old Dhaka are at risk: RAJUK Chairman

Engineer Md Reazul Islam, Chairman of the Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (RAJUK), has said that most buildings in Old Dhaka are at risk.

Six- to seven-storey buildings have been constructed on plots smaller than one katha.”

He made the remarks on Saturday while speaking to journalists after inspecting several buildings in old Dhaka’s Bangshal.

RAJUK authorities have taken the initiative of newly planned urbanization while preserving the heritage of the century-old buildings of Old Dhaka.

Reazul Islam warned that the building in Kosaituli, whose railing collapsed during the recent earthquake, would be sealed off if its approved design is not produced within the next seven days.

”Those who are still constructing buildings by force, we are disconnecting their utility meters. Yet some continue the work using illegal meters or generators.”
