Latif Siddique’s nomination declared valid

Independent candidate Abdul Latif Siddique has been cleared to contest from Tangail-4 after the Election Commission declared his nomination valid at a hearing on Sunday.

Md Liaqat Ali, the Jatiya Party candidate from the same constituency, had appealed to the Election Commission challenging the validity of Siddique’s nomination.

During the hearing, Liaqat Ali’s lawyer argued that Latif Siddique should be barred from contesting the parliamentary election because he is a leader of a banned political party.

At this point, EC official Masud said, “The government has banned a political party, but it has not banned any individual.”

After hearing all parties, the Election Commission decided to uphold the validity of Latif Siddique’s nomination.

On the same day, the Commission also began hearing the final day’s appeals against Returning Officers’ decisions on nomination papers for the upcoming 13th National Parliamentary Election. The hearings started at around 10:15 a.m. at the Election Building auditorium (Basement-2) in Agargaon, Dhaka.

Latif Siddique is contesting as an independent candidate in Tangail-4 (Kalihati) in the upcoming parliamentary election.
