
A government election observer mission from Japan has arrived in Bangladesh to observe and support the fair conduct of the country’s upcoming general election scheduled for 12 February.
The delegation, led by Masato Watanabe, former Japanese ambassador to Bangladesh, is visiting the country from 10 to 13 February as part of Japan’s support for Bangladesh’s democratic process, the Japanese Embassy said in a statement on its Facebook page.
On 10 February, SAIDA Shinichi, ambassador of Japan to Bangladesh, along with members of the observer mission, paid a courtesy call on Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus.
During the meeting, the Japanese delegation paid tribute to Yunus’s leadership in advancing Bangladesh’s democratisation and political transition through dialogue.
They also expressed deep appreciation for his contributions to strengthening Japan–Bangladesh relations and conveyed their expectation that the upcoming general election would be conducted in a fair and credible manner.
In response, Yunus expressed his gratitude to the Government of Japan for its continued support of Bangladesh’s electoral process and for dispatching an election observation mission to monitor the general election.
