Former Awami League MP from Thakurgaon-2, Md Dabirul Islam, has been released on bail from Dinajpur jail, one and a half years after his arrest.
He was released around 7:10pm on Thursday, confirmed Farhad Sarkar, acting jailer of Dinajpur District Jail.
Earlier the same day, a court in Thakurgaon granted bail to the former MP.
Following the fall of the Awami League government on 5 August amid a mass uprising, Dabirul was arrested in a case filed for alleged land grabbing and extortion.
His son and former MP for the same constituency, Md Mazharul Islam Sujan, was also arrested in the case and remains in Dinajpur jail.
Family members of Dabirul said that prolonged imprisonment left him seriously ill. He has been taken to Dhaka for advanced medical treatment.
They alleged that due to a lack of medical care in jail, Dabirul’s health condition deteriorated, leaving him unable to walk.
Ramesh Chandra Sen, former Awami League MP from Thakurgaon-1, died on 7 February after falling ill at Dinajpur District Jail.
He became unwell at the jail in the morning and was taken to Dinajpur Medical College Hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead on arrival.
