Chief Whip of the Jatiya Sangsad Nurul Islam Moni has said that no negative or opportunistic politics over the July Charter will be tolerated, stressing that the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) fully supports the charter and is committed to implementing it in full.
He made the remarks on Friday while speaking at a discussion meeting organised by a cultural group at the Toffazzal Hossain Manik Miah Hall of the National Press Club, marking Independence and National Day.
Moni said BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman has already pledged to implement the July Charter and that the party is working towards that goal.
He claimed that BNP assumed responsibility for implementing the charter after coming to power through a public mandate.
Criticising opposition parties, he said they have repeatedly shifted their positions, at times demanding local government elections, at other times reforms, and sometimes constitutional amendments.
He described these demands as reactions to electoral defeat.
Referring to pre-election debates, Moni said some parties had demanded the introduction of a proportional representation (PR) electoral system. He noted that such a system is not practiced in major democracies like the United States, the United Kingdom, or neighbouring India.
He added that BNP had made it clear that elections could not be delayed due to what he described as unreasonable demands.
Regarding the July Charter, Moni said BNP did not oppose it but rather provided some differing opinions, which were incorporated into the document. He added that the charter would be implemented through a proper institutional process and discussed in detail in parliament.
Praising the party’s leadership, Moni said that under the leadership of Tarique Rahman, an example of good governance has been established. He added that ensuring the fundamental rights of ordinary citizens remains the government’s top priority.
