Court orders seizure of tax records of former MP Mahbubul Alam Hanif, wife

A court has ordered the seizure of income tax records of Mahbubul Alam Hanif, joint general secretary of the Bangladesh Awami League and former lawmaker from Kushtia-3 constituency, and his wife Fowzia Alam.

The order was passed on Monday by the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Sabbir Fayez following two separate petitions filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

Md Riaz Hossain, bench assistant of the concerned court, confirmed the matter.

The petitions were submitted on behalf of the ACC by Deputy Director Mohammad Tajul Islam Bhuiyan.

According to the petitions, a case has been filed against Mahbubul Alam Hanif over allegations of acquiring assets worth Tk27.39 crore beyond known sources of income and conducting suspicious transactions amounting to Tk86.66 crore through 18 bank accounts, allegedly involving bribery and corruption.

The petitions further stated that Hanif and his wife Fowzia Alam jointly amassed assets worth Tk4.69 crore beyond known income through collusion. Another case has also been filed against them over allegations of suspicious transactions amounting to Tk33.13 crore through 16 bank accounts.

The ACC told the court that seizure of their income tax records was necessary for the proper investigation of the cases.
