Youth held for sexually harassing minor cousin in Habiganj

Police have arrested a 20-year-old youth for allegedly sexually harassing his four-year-old cousin at a village in Habiganj Sadar upazila on Friday.

The arrested was identified as Bijoy, son of Abdul Salam, a resident of Durlabhpur village under the upazila.

According to police and local sources, the incident took place on the night of May 15 when Bijoy went to visit his uncle’s house. At one point, he sexually assaulted the minor girl inside the house. Hearing her child scream, the mother rushed to the spot and the victim narrated the ordeal.

As the victim’s physical condition deteriorated due to severe pain, her family admitted her to Habiganj Sadar Modern Hospital on Thursday night, where she is currently undergoing medical treatment.

Habiganj Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Zahid Hossain said that upon receiving a formal complaint from the victim’s mother, police launched a drive and arrested the accused promptly.

The OC added that hospital doctors, following a medical examination, confirmed that the child was subjected to sexual harassment rather than rape.

Legal proceedings are underway, the OC concluded.
