One to die for killing minor girl in Sylhet

SYLHET, Aug 6, 2026 – A court here today sentenced a man to death for killing a four-year-old girl in Sadar upazila here this year.

Judge Abu Obaida of the Sylhet Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal delivered the verdict this morning, Public prosecutor Md Badrul Ahmed Chowdhury confirmed.

The convict is Zakir Hossain, 30, son of late Tota Mia, a resident of Sonatala village of the upazila.

The court also acquitted Joynal Ahmed and Abul Kalam, brothers of the convict, as the charges brought against them were not proven.

The verdict was delivered within just three months of the incident of the horrific crime.

According to prosecution, the girl went missing from her home on May 6 this year. Two days later, on the night of May 8, police recovered her body from a pond near the house.

Later, on the night of May 11, police arrested her neighbor Zakir Hossain, 30, on charges of attempting rape and killing the girl. Zakir confessed that he first attempted to violet the girl. As she fell unconscious, he strangled her to death.
