Bangladesh Parliament Secretariat has declared his parliamentary seat vacant in accordance with the Constitution as Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, the Member of Parliament elected from the Thakurgaon-1 constituency in the 13th National Parliament, has assumed office as the new President of Bangladesh.
The information was disclosed in a gazette notification issued on Saturday (August 22), signed by Barrister Md Golam Sarwar Bhuiyan, Secretary of the Legislative Support Wing (Legislation Branch-2) of the Bangladesh Parliament Secretariat.
The notification stated that Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, elected as a member of the 13th National Parliament from Electoral Constituency No. 3, Thakurgaon-1, assumed the duties of the President of Bangladesh on Friday (August 21). Consequently, the seat became vacant from the date he assumed office, in accordance with Article 50(4) of the Constitution.
The notification has been sent to the Government Press for immediate publication in an additional issue of the Bangladesh Gazette. A copy has also been sent to the Senior Secretary of the Election Commission Secretariat to take the necessary steps to arrange a by-election for the vacant seat.
Copies of the notification have also been sent to the Cabinet Secretary, the Prime Minister’s Office, the offices of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker, the Leader of the Opposition, and other relevant offices for information and necessary action.
