BNP acting secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said on Tuesday that BNP is a party that keeps its promises and commitments to the people.
He made the remarks while talking to journalists after paying tribute to the graves of the party’s founder, late President Ziaur Rahman, and former prime minister Khaleda Zia on Tuesday on the occasion of the BNP’s 48th founding anniversary.
Rizvi, also the Prime Minister’s political and industry affairs adviser, said Khaleda Zia had led an uncompromising nine-year movement to restore democracy and had never compromised with anyone in her struggle to bring democracy back to the country.
“She remained steadfast until the end in fulfilling the promises and commitments she had made to the people. That is why BNP is a party that keeps its promises and commitments to the people,” he said.
Rizvi said Khaleda Zia had led the country and the party through various forms of repression, persecution, oppression and severe anarchy.
“Various domestic and international forces repeatedly tried to defeat BNP and Khaleda Zia through different conspiracies. But she never deviated from her firm resolve to strengthen democracy despite all obstacles, repression and conspiracies,” he said.
He said Khaleda Zia had organised BNP leaders and activists from the grassroots to the national level and led the movement with the commitment to establish democracy and people’s rights.
“Under her leadership, the long-running movement and struggle eventually turned into a mass movement. The surge of public strength on the streets later grew even larger. Through that movement, public anger and resistance against the then government became increasingly evident,” Rizvi said.
Rizvi said BNP was moving forward in Khaleda Zia’s absence, upholding her ideals, courage, bravery and spirit of independence and sovereignty.
He said the flag of independence and sovereignty built by Ziaur Rahman and Khaleda Zia’s political ideals had been entrusted to Tarique Rahman.
“Under his leadership, BNP is being organised across the country and working to fulfil its commitments to the people,” Rizvi said.
