Thakurgaon-1 by-election: 6 candidates’ nomination valid

The nomination papers of six candidates, including those from the BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami, have been declared valid for the Thakurgaon-1 by-election.

District Election Officer and Returning Officer Md Kamrul Islam announced the decision on Tuesday morning at the district election office, in the presence of the candidates and their representatives.

As no objections were raised against the nominations, all six candidates were declared eligible to contest the by-election. The returning officer also heard from the candidates and their representatives and provided guidance on ensuring a free and fair election.

A total of six candidates from five political parties submitted nomination papers for the seat. The BNP has two candidates in the race.

Regarding the two BNP candidates, the returning officer said the candidate whose name is candidates are BNP-nominated Mirza Foysal Amin, president of the Thakurgaon district BNP and younger brother of BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir; BNP district vice-president Obaidullah Masud; Jamaat-e-Islami candidate Delwar Hossain; Islami Andolan Bangladesh candidate Khademul Islam; Khelafat Andolan candidate Abdul Alim formally submitted with the signature of the BNP secretary general will receive the party’s electoral symbol.

The candidates are BNP-nominated Mirza Foysal Amin, president of the Thakurgaon district BNP and younger brother of BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir; BNP district vice-president Obaidullah Masud; Jamaat-e-Islami candidate Delwar Hossain; Islami Andolan Bangladesh candidate Khademul Islam; Khelafat Andolan candidate Abdul Alim Nizami; and Bangladesh Congress candidate Hussain Muhammad Omar Faruk.

The election symbols will be allocated on October 8, while voting in the constituency is scheduled for October 29.
