President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Thursday called for an end to the culture of political confrontation and vindictiveness, urging all political forces to build reconciliation and consensus through cooperation for the country’s progress.

“Everyone must work together for the country, coming out of the political culture of blaming one another, harming opponents and harassing them through lawsuits. The country cannot move forward properly without political reconciliation,” he said.

The President made the remarks when a delegation of the MBA Association of Bangladesh (MAB) met him at Bangabhaban, said a press release.

Praising MAB’s contribution, the President said the organisation had demonstrated competence in various fields and was making significant contributions to the country’s development and progress.

He said MAB had also played an important role in raising public awareness and supporting the democratic transition by presenting research-based and factual information in response to what he described as falsehoods propagated by the previous government.

Referring to Nelson Mandela’s role in South Africa’s political transformation, the President said political reconciliation had helped create a peaceful environment there by bringing an end to long-standing conflict and bloodshed.

He said political foresight, tolerance and mutual understanding were essential to taking a country forward.

The President also said professional organisations such as MAB could contribute to national development by providing opinions, expertise and constructive suggestions on important issues.

He stressed the importance of involving MAB’s qualified and skilled members in various key institutions and development activities, taking into consideration their experience and professional competence.

During the meeting, members of the MAB delegation congratulated the President and praised his long political and professional experience, wisdom and leadership.

Recalling his past cooperation and encouragement in the organisation’s activities, they sought his continued advice and support. The President assured them of his cooperation.

The delegation comprised MAB President Syed Alamgir, Secretary General Dr Md Shamsuzzaman, Vice-Presidents Engineer Md Nazrul Islam, Prof Dr Muhammad Farid Uddin and Farida Ahmed Niku, Joint Secretaries General Md Shahidur Rahman and Adnan Sabir, Organising Secretary Md Ataur Rahman Sarker, Treasurer S M Sultan Kabir and Research Secretary Dr Monirul Hasan Masum.

The President’s Secretary, Press Secretary and Assistant Military Secretary were also present at the meeting.
