The prosecution will appeal against the 10-year prison sentence handed down to former information minister and Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) president Hasanul Haq Inu in a crimes against humanity case over the killing of six people in Kushtia during the July uprising.

International Crimes Tribunal prosecutor Gazi MH Tamim confirmed the decision on Sunday, saying the appeal would be filed this week.

On June 30, ICT-2 sentenced Inu to 10 years in prison after finding him guilty on three of eight charges brought against him. A three-member bench, headed by Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury, delivered the verdict.

The prosecution had brought eight charges against Inu, the sole accused in the case. He was convicted on three charges and sentenced to 10 years for each, amounting to 30 years. However, the tribunal ordered him to serve the sentences concurrently, meaning he will serve a total of 10 years.

The tribunal acquitted him of charges 1, 2, 4, 5 and 8, citing insufficient evidence of his involvement in those offences.

The verdict was the sixth delivered by the two International Crimes Tribunals sitting jointly and the third by Tribunal-2.

Earlier, 16 people, including ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, were sentenced to death in five separate cases involving crimes against humanity committed during the July uprising.
