Bangladesh and Lithuania have agreed to strengthen bilateral relations and expand cooperation in trade, investment, technology, migration and other areas.

The two sides reached the understanding when Lithuanian Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs Vidmantas Verbickas called on State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dhaka on Thursday.

The state minister stressed the need to explore untapped potential and expand cooperation between the two countries.

He urged Lithuania to increase imports of Bangladeshi products, including readymade garments, textiles, pharmaceuticals, leather and leather goods.

Humaiun Kobir also highlighted investment opportunities in Bangladesh and invited Lithuanian businesses to invest in the country.

The two sides discussed expanding cooperation in information technology, e-registration, e-governance, financial technology, cyber security, e-transportation, transport-system digitisation, artificial intelligence and high-tech medical devices.

Verbickas highlighted Lithuania’s potential in these sectors and expressed keen interest in expanding cooperation with Bangladesh.

They also discussed employment opportunities, human mobility and migration, as well as visa facilitation for Bangladeshi students, businesspeople, investors and tourists.

The two sides also discussed the Rohingya repatriation issue and sought Lithuania’s support in this regard.

They agreed to deepen engagement between the two countries during Lithuania’s upcoming presidency of the European Union from January to June 2027.

The Lithuanian vice-minister congratulated Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman on his election as president of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.

He expressed hope that Bangladesh-Lithuania relations would be further strengthened during his presidency of the UN General Assembly and Lithuania’s EU presidency.

Humaiun Kobir stressed the role of the EU-BD Business Forum and compliance with existing business frameworks. He also called for greater use of regional connectivity centred on Lithuania in the Baltic region and beyond to explore untapped potential and bring mutual benefits.
