Local administration imposed section 144 of the Criminal Code of Procedures at Dakbanglow and its adjoining areas under Bishwanath upazila headquarters in Sylhet from Thursday 9:00am due to the fear of possible deterioration of law and order after two rival groups of people announced to hold protest rallies in the same area at the same time.
Bishwanath upazila nirbahi officer Md Zahid Bin Kashem, also the upazila executive magistrate, confirmed New Age of imposing the section 144 and said that the decision was taken in the public interest.
Local people said that the upazila unit Juba Dal and Chhatra Dal, youth and students fronts of ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party, convened a rally in front of the Bishwanath Dakbanglow schedule for 3:00pm Thursday, protesting at an attack on the upazila’s Khajanchi union parishad chairman Kabir Hossain Dhala, following a dispute over a piece of land.
On the other hand, the residents of village Bhurki of the Khajanchi union under the banner of ‘Conscious Civil Society of the Upazila’ also convened a protest rally at the same place and time, forcing the administration to impose the section 144 to avert any untoward incident, they said.
The UNO told New Age in the morning that the section 144 would remain enacted in the concerned area until further announcement.
‘Strict legal action will be taken against those who disobey the order,’ he said.
