Barcelona and Real Madrid are reportedly monitoring 17-year-old American midfielder Cavan Sullivan, raising fresh questions about Manchester City’s plans to sign the highly rated teenager.
Sullivan, who plays for Major League Soccer (MLS) side Philadelphia Union, has attracted attention across Europe for his technical ability, quick decision-making and creativity in midfield.
According to Spanish newspaper Marca, Barcelona are exploring the possibility of signing the young talent as part of their long-term plans to build a team around promising players. Real Madrid have also reportedly made enquiries about the American teenager.
However, Manchester City remain in a favourable position in the race for his signature. The English club reached a preliminary agreement with Philadelphia Union in 2024, with Sullivan expected to join City after turning 18. He will reach that milestone on September 28, 2027.
City’s ongoing legal battle over alleged breaches of the Premier League’s financial regulations could, however, complicate their plans. The club faces a series of charges, and the outcome of the proceedings could have implications for its future transfer strategy.
There is no confirmation that the legal proceedings will affect Sullivan’s agreement with City. Nevertheless, interest from Barcelona and Real Madrid could intensify competition for the teenager.
Reports suggest Sullivan remains inclined to honour his existing understanding with City, although his eventual European destination remains uncertain.
Sullivan also has a special connection to Bangladesh through his maternal family. Born in the United States, he is of Bangladeshi descent through his mother. His maternal grandmother, Sultana Alam, was originally from Dhaka before moving to the United States for higher education.
His two elder brothers, Ronan and Declan, have represented Bangladesh and won the SAFF Under-20 Championship. Sullivan, however, chose to represent the United States at international level.
He recently made history by scoring against Mexico in a friendly during the international break, becoming the youngest goalscorer in the history of the United States men’s national team. He was 17 years and five days old at the time.
Sullivan had previously set another record in club football. In 2024, he made his MLS debut at just 14 years and 293 days, becoming the youngest player to appear in the competition.
