Companiganj upazila Correspondent : A youth was hacked to critical injuries by his cousins at Companiganj upazila in Sylhet at the early hours of Monday, following a dispute over the ownership of a pond and died at the early morning while he was undergoing treatment at Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital.

The deceased was identified Aftab Uddin, son of Kala Miah of Duprirpar village of the Companiganj upazila, police said.

Local people said that Aftab’s family had been locked in a dispute over ownership of the ancestral pond with the family of his uncle, Abdul Halim.

At around 1:30am on Monday, Aftab and his associate Zahangir Alam were draining water from the pond using a water pump to catch fish when several people, including Aftab’s cousins, attacked them with locally made weapons, they said.

Aftab sustained critical injuries from the attack and was rescued from the spot by the neighbours and admitted to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries at around 5:00 am, the locals said.

They also said that Zahangir Alam has also been injured and receiving treatment at the hospital.

Companiganj Police Station officer-in-charge Usman Gani confirmed the death of Aftab and said that the victim’s body was handed over to his family in the afternoon after completion of a post-mortem examination at the hospital.

He said that the police detained Jewel Ahmed, 28, son of Abdul Jalil, of the same Duprirpar village for his suspected involvement in the attack on Aftab.

‘Preparation to send him to produce before the district judicial magistrate court is underway,’ the police officer said in the afternoon, adding that further legal step would be taken after receiving a legal complaint from the victim’s family.
