Beckton Community Neighbourhood observes International Mother Language Da

unnamed (6)Beckton Community Neighbourhood organised an event to observe International Mother Language Day, on Saturday 21st February 2015 at 12.00 pm outside Beckton Globe.

The event featured cultural performances from the different communities in the area along with a variety of stalls selling an array of products. Members of different communities took part to observe this colourful event. These communities included British, Bangladeshis, Caribbean, Chinese, Italian, African, Spanish, Lithuanian and Sri Lankan.

Cllr Ayesha Chowdhury said that International Mother Language Day is an observance held annually on 21 February worldwide to promote awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism. She also said that since Newham is a multi-cultural borough, authority should promote as many cultures and languages as possible to show the cultural diversity.

The event was organised by Cllr Ayesha Chowdhury & the Neighbourhood team, supported by local organisations and volunteers. Cllr Ken Clark was present as Chief Guest. Guests who were also present in the observance included ward councillors, Editor of Bangla Mirror Abdul Karim Goni, Mashud Ahmed, Hafsa Islam, Dr. Khursida Begum, Nasrin Akther, Shafiqul Islam, Sheikh Abdul Salam and Azam Khan.
