A waiter has been jailed after he admitted stalking a vulnerable woman through the streets of Whitechapel before raping her.
Shohid Miah, 34, on Kings Arms Court, followed a “visibly intoxicated” woman for some time on April 20 last year before approaching her at about 10.30pm.
He led her into a secluded area on Old Montague Street and after being captured on CCTV, staff monitoring the camera contacted the police.
Officers arrived to find Miah adjusting the clothing on the lower half of his body and the victim, who is in her 20s, was found distresses on the floor.
Miah was arrested on suspicion of rape and declined to answer questions when interviewed by police, bur provided a prepared statement which claimed he had been propositioned by the victim.
He pleaded guilty at Snaresbrook Crown Court on March 11 to two counts of rape on the same woman.
He was jailed for five years and four months at the same court on Thursday.
Detective Constable Denise Rutter of the Met’s Sexual Offences, Exploitation and Child Abuse Command said: “Miah stalked the victim through the streets of Whitechapel waiting for an opportunity to take advantage of her vulnerable condition.
“The victim in this case has been incredibly brave throughout this investigation and I hope that this conviction provides her with a measure of comfort and that the sentence handed down encourages other victims of sexual crime not to suffer in silence, but to come forward.”
