DUTIES AND OBLIGATIONS ABOUT EID UL-FITR

jhdsRayhan Ahmed Topader :

The day of Eid-ul-Fitr marks the conclusion of the holy month of Ramadan and the beginning of the month of Shawwal. From this day,Muslims are absolved of their obligation to fast and can contin ue living as normal. To commemor ate the end of Ramadan, the feast of Eid-ul-Fitr lasts for three days, feast during which Musli m get together with friends and family and celebrate. Before the celebrations, however,it is important that the obligation of paying Zak at-ul-Fitr is completed before Eid prayers.Unlike the general Zakat which is 2.5% of all net savings,Zakat-ul-Fitr is a very small amo unt, enough to cover the cost of one meal. For children, their parents or guardians pay the amount on their behalf.Making a donation after Eid prayers, however, will not count towards Zakat-ul-Fitr,and so it is vital that this is done before Eid Salah.

Eid Salat (prayer) consist of two raka’ats with six takbeers in congrigation of Muslims followed by the Khutba of Eid.Follow the Imam by raising both hands up to the ears, say Allahu Akbar, this is the first Takbeer to enter in the Salat. Then fold your hands in the front and recite the Sanaa’, subhaanak allahumma.till the end and. Then say Allahu Akbar thrice, following you imam, each time raising both hands up to the ears and droping them. After each takbeer there is going to be a slight pause in which Subhanallah may be recited thrice. After the third takbeer the hands should be folded in front and listen to the imam reciting Aoozubillah, Bismillah,Surah Fateha and some other Surah and. Then perform Ruku as Imam says Allahu Akbar and. Then go to Sajdah as usual following your imams takbeer.

In the second rakaat imam will first recite Surah Fateha and some other Surah, then will say three takbeers after it. In all these three takbeers hands will not to be folded but dropped after each takbeer. And.Then go into the Ruku just after the fourth takbeer. After the Eid Prayers,Muslims eat and celeb rate with friends and family. The feast of Eid-ul-Fitr is about joy and happiness, but also about remem bering the poor and hungry.

Thus,Muslims are encouraged to give dona tions to charitable orga nizations. It is also encouraged to seek out famili es in need of assistance, those in debt, orphans and gene rally those in need of basic necessities likefood, water, clothing, medicine and education Give generously in charity and share the joy of Eid-ul-Fitr with your brothers and sisters around the world.

Eid-ul-Fitr is time for spreading happiness, excha nging gifts and celebrating your Rama dan exper ience O Ummatul Muslimeen! The celebration of Eid ul-Fitr culminates a month of fasting wherein the faithful have spent their time praying and beseeching Almighty Allah Subhanahu Wata’ala  for forgiveness and mercy. For many, the most glorious month of Ramadan was not just an abstention from food and drink.Rather,it was an exercise in patience and discipline.Eid-ul-Fitr is the celebration for those who fasted and obeyed Almighty Allah’s rules and teachings. It is for those who spent the most wonderful and  month of caring and sharing, the month of patience and the month of of const ant Ibadah in complete devot ion to Almighty Allah Rabbul Ala’meen. Eid is a time when the entire Muslim community comes together to share in each others joys and bless ings and also to lessen the burden of those who are suffering.

It is preceded by people shopping and looking around for gifts for their near and dear ones. It is a time when the bright lights from homes and shops illuminates our life.We use this day and the following days to spread happiness and social harmony by visiting our friends and relatives and offering our Duahs to all those who have departed from the Doonya. Gifts are exchanged during Eid by young and old alike. We also visit the elderly and the sick.Eid is a time where all kinds or festivities prevail. Many of us gormandize to make up for lost food” during the month of Ramadan.

However, with all the going around we some times forget our lesser privileged brethren. We forget that there are many out there who have nothing to celebrate. There are those among our brothers and sisters for whom Eid day is just another ordinary day. There are those who open their cupboards on Eid day and find them bare. There are those  in hospitals who will go through a bleak and lonely day with no one visiting them. Friendless, deprived of company they will have no one to offer solace or comfort.Let us there fore see to it that our deprived brethren welcome the day of Eid-ul-Fitr with warmth and hope. This, after all,is a day of caring and sharing and bringing joy and happiness to those who are less fortunate.

This is the essence and message of this most wonderful day of reward.O People of Imaan! As we buy gifts and clothes for our children, let us earmark a special sum for those who cannot afford to buy.We should also instill in our children a sense of compassion so that when they buy something they will also think of their unfortu nate brethren.Let us teach them the art of giving,

the art of caring and sharing. The desire of wish ing for others what we would wish for.oursel ves.We should let them know that there are milli ons of children in war torn areas of Iraq,Afghan istan’s.Palestine,Kashmir,Chechnya,Bosnia,Kosova, the Philippines and the Caucasus region, the poor and downtr odden areas of Africa,Asia and South America and even in the forgotten ghettos of Europe and North America who do not have the basic neces sities to make this day a different day-a day of joy and happiness, a day of rejoicing and thanksgiving.

Ayyuhal Muslimoon! This is a day for praying and remembering our unfortunate brothers and sisters who are victims of drought, famine and other natur al disasters as well as those who had surviv ed the devastating earthquake in Pakistan and Kash mir and the recent floods in parts of Africa and Bangladesh. They need our urgent help and as true Muslims we must do whatever is necessary to assist them in rebuilding their lives. We cannot divest ourselves from the misery of others. We cannot shrug it off saying that it does not concern us.To do this would be an injus tice to humanity and to our Imaan. The Most Holy and Glorious Quran reminds us in verse 8 of Surah Al Ma’idah:

Many of us donate money to charity and fulfill our religious duty. However,if we actually meet the recipients of our charity the perce ption of charity changes. There is a feeling of belonging when the recipients and givers meet.Islamic ideology teac hes us to be kind and compassionate. Our Beloved Nabee.Muhammad Sallallahoo Alayhi Wasallam said:I and the provider of the orphan will be toge ther-And what greater prize is there for anyone of us than to be around our beloved Nabee-Rahm atul Liel Ala’meen Sallallahoo Alayhi Wasallam? All we need for that is Muhabbat, compassion, sincerity and a feeling of brothe rhood and under standing. And that will decide the quality of our life on earth and the hereafter.

From the first moment that the light of Allah-wariness shines into the heart of a human being possessing faith,he or she becomes conscious of its worth and significance Humility, modesty and kindness are proper only before Almighty Allah, Who created all the existents and the world of being with His Will, and human beings are His real servants. Basically, humility in front of the Most Exalted Creator of the heavens and the earth is itself the greatest source of human honour and dignity.

As Muslims we must remember that the vital force that lies within a pious person keeps him or her aware of the realities of life and he or she never gets swallowed up by the deep and shorel ess sea of mundane things for the sake of enjo ying life. That is because our intellect and souls are infused with the Truths of the Din of Haqq and we view everything in the perspective of an Isla mic world view. Islam attaches so much value to the affairs of the faithful that their station of honour is menti oned along with the Majesty of Almighty Allah Subhanahu Wata’ala and His Beloved Nabee Sallallahoo Alayhi Wasallam in [part of] verse 8 of Surah Al Munafiqun:

But honour belongs to Allah and His Messenger and to the Believers.O Ummatul Muslimeen!May Almighty Allah Most Merciful grant us all the good fortune to revive the Islamic values in our midst and to cherish them with all our heart: to bow and bend only before Him and to fear no one besides Him, and be loyal to His Din, and proud of His Message! We beseech Him from the depths of our hearts to confer this great wealth upon us for He is indeed,Able to do all things. This is the humble Message of Eid to you, the believers of the Din of Haqq.Cure the ills of the world with the panacea you possess. The world will then know that this radical cure is possible only with the elixir still preserved in its pristine purity by the Ummah of Almighty Allah’s Beloved-Nabee Muhammed al-Mustapha Sallal lahoo Alayhi Wasallam. This is the essence and message of Eid-ul-Fitr-the day the Mala’eeka in heaven call it the Day of Youm-ul Ja’iza-the day of Great Reward.

Eid ul Fitr is a celebratory occasion that Muslims mark the end of Ramadan with.It denotes the end of a whole month of spiritual cleansing that the Muslims have gone through and lands on the 1st of Shawwal, the tenth month of the Islamic Lunar Calendar.Generally muslims will celebrate with lavish feasts and buy new clothes on the occa sion and celebrate and enjoy themselves.Eid ul

Azha is a completely different Eid coincid ing with the rituals of the Hajj, specifically the 10th of Zillhajj, the 12th and last month of the Islamic Lunar Calendar. It marks an important point in the revelation of God to Abraham when He asked him to sacrifice his son, Ishmael in the name of God as an act of submission to God. Abraham being the good servant accepted when at the last minute God intervened and replaced Ishmael with a lamb instead. Almost every single ritual of Hajj, the stoning of Satan, the tawaf of Safa and Marwa, the sacrificial lamb, they all originate from Abraham and his wife and his son settling in Canaan, along with their trials and tribulations. This is explained here.

After such an extensive training session a celeb ration is only logical. This is where Eid al-Fitr (the Festival/Holiday of Breaking Fast) comes in.It is a celebration which lasts 3 days and celebrates the successful completion of Ramadan and the newly renewed spiritual cleansing and connec tion. This particular Eid is also associated with sweets and some call it the Sugar Festival or Sweet Festival

Sweets of various kinds are a common feature of this Eid.There are many different ways in which people celebrate the Eid but in general they all go in the morning to pray the special Eid prayer. On the way there and while waiting for the prayer session to start it is common to recite the Eid Takbir like this:

Then after praying people generally have a feast of sorts with their families and or friends. It is a typical time to travel to family’s homes and visit.Typical foods vary by country/region.In the Middle East it is common to buy new clothes for the Eid and children often recieve Eidia (pronou nced pretty much like idea) which is money.Eidia is recieved from family and friends but generally comes from an adult to child.Gifts between adults are rare and actual gifts from child to adult are almost non-existant.Kids use the money to buy toys and sweets.Practices vary around the world quite a bit.For example in China it’s common for families to go visit the graves of their ancestors.

In the US,Canada,Australia, UK it is often more common to give children gifts as opposed to money (to compare with strong Christian gifting practices such as Christmas common in those areas)it is also increasingly common to make Eid goody bags with little trinkets party favors, stick ers, temporary tattoo’s,and candy to hand out to children after the Eid prayer and gifts between adults or from child to adult are more common. So exact practices and traditions have a great deal of variation around the world often influenced by domin ant local cultural practices. It is also common to go to amusement parks/carnivals circuses in many places althugh in the West this is more common than in many other countries probably because immigrants and subsequent generations do not have very large extended families to visit so they spend more time going out as smaller familial groups and because of the often minority status of their holidays and the abundance of Christian holiday commercializa tion they often feel the need to make Eid’s “extra special” to keep kids interested

There are two Eids celebrated in Islam and both follow major acts of worship. The first is Eid al-Fitr which follows Ramadan and the second is Eid al-Adha which follows the Hajj.In order to underst and the importance of each holiday an underst anding of the act of worship that precedes it is also necessary so I will explain the impor tance of the worship and then the holiday that follows.

Ramadan is an entire month during which Muslims focus on purifying themselves, getting closer to God,and growing in their knowle dge, faith.During Ramadan Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset. This fasting includes refraining from food, drink, sexual intercourse, bad language, and bad behavior.Muslims generally read an entire chapter of the Qur’an each day (it has 30 chap ters) so they read the entire book in one month. It is often compared to being a mini boot-camp in which we arm ourselves with knowledge by reading the Qur’an and fit ourselves physically fit but modifying our diet, increasing our good deeds, and committing more and greater acts of worship.By fasting we become more sympath etic to those less fortunate than ourselves because we feel what it is like to go without food or drink, we feel good. With the start of the month of Ramadan, where Muslims plan how they are going to spend each and every moment of this month with good deeds, prayer and worship of Allah Almighty, they also plan on how they are going to celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr that would come at the end of Ramadan.

The Eid after Ramadan is one of the most awaited events among Muslims and Muslims from across the globe make special prepara tions for this day,as it is a day of spreading and sharing joy and happiness. The lines below discuss the Eid-ul-Fitr as a blessing and the major duties and obliga tions a Muslim must undertake and perform pertinent to Eid-ul-Fitr.Besides the fact that on the day of Eid there is joy and bliss all around, the festival of Eid-ul-Fitr itself is a blessing from Allah Almighty. Therefore, the notion that Muslims celebrate this Eid as an end of Ramadan, in commemor ation of someone or it is some thing that is fabricated by the later Muslims is wrong.

Therefore, both the festivals of Eid are actually

occasions of joy and happiness given by Allah Almighty to Muslims, hence, there is no attribution of Eid with anyone else, nor are there any connot ationsThe first major oblig ation pertaining to Eid-ul-Fitr is the offering of Eid prayer.Eid being an occasion of celebr ation does not mean that on that day a Muslim can forget Allah and indulge in pure pleasures and marry making. Rather, praying to Allah on the day of Eid means that a Muslim unders tands and realizes the fact that all the joy and pleasure in his life is a blessing of Allah and He needs to be thanked for it.

Therefore, the offering of Eid prayer was a routine of Prophet Muham mad (PBUH),hence every Muslim must also try to offer this prayer and start the day of Eid-ul-Fitr with worship of Allah and by being grateful to Him.Islam is a religion that pays great emphasis on giving charity. The emphasis on charity increases even more when there is a need of making joy and happiness available from it to the less fortunate ones. The celebrations of Eid-ul-Fitr are a perfect occasion when being charitable can lead to others being happy and joyful. In this regard, Islam gives the concept of Sadqah-tul-Fitr, which is alms giving that has to be offered before the offering of Eid-ul-Fitr prayer. The right time for offering this Sadqah is between the Fajr and Eid-ul-Fitr prayer. However, the Sadaqah can also be offered during the month of Ramadan so that the less fortunate can have time to buy necessary things with which they can celeb rate their Eid in a better way. Therefore, a Muslim must consider this Sadqah as an obligatory act pertaining to the celebrations of Eid-ul-Fitr and offer it before the prayer.

For a Muslim the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is the best example and every one wishes to imitate Him as much as possible. Pertaining to Eid-ul-Fitr,besides the prayer of Eid and the Sadq ah Fitr, there are other elements of Sunnah of Prophet (PBUH) specific to that day. Some general Sunnahs, which a Muslim must try to observe during Eid day,are as follows. The first Sunnah is of waking up early in the morning.Eid day does not mean that a Muslim is free from the obligatory prayer of Fajr, rather on the day of Eid as well a Muslim must wake up at the time of Fajr and offer the prayer. After the prayer one should prepare the dress and other wearable things that are to be worn when going to the Eid prayer.

Therefore, the things need to be ready once a person goes for a bath.Taking shower on the day of Eid before wearing new clothes is a Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and a Muslim must also make sure that before wearing on clean clothes he is also clean in bodily respect as well.If the clothes are new then well and good.If new are not available then one must wear the best clothes and on those best clothes one must apply perf ume as well to ensure that one is best prep ared for the prayer. It is also a Sunnah that before going for prayer,a Muslim eats breakfast or anything that is available in the house. The same thing is done after the prayer in case of Eid-ul-Adha.

Offering the Eid-ul-Fitr prayer with congre gation is also a Sunnah. Therefore, unless there are any dire circumstances, other than that a Muslim must offer the Eid prayer with congregation.

Pertaining to Eid-ul-fitr another Sunnah of Prophet (PBUH) was that He would go to the mosque from one way and come back home from the other way so that He could meet and greet as much people as possible on the day of Eid.In a nutshell,Eid-ul-Fitr requires no introduction and it undoubtedly is an occasion specific to happiness and joy all around. However,in celebrations a Muslim must not forget that these celebrations need to be thanked and in celebrations one also needs to make the less fortunate a part of it so that they could also celebrate Eid and the spirit of this blessing of Eid to you, the believers of the Din of Haqq. Cure the ills of the world with the panacea you possess. The world will then know that this radical cure is possible only with the elixir still preserved in its pristine purity by the Ummah of Almighty Allah’s Beloved-Nabee Muhammed al-Mustapha Salla llahoo Alayhi Wasallam. This is the essence and message of Eid-ul-Fitr-the day the Mala’eeka in heaven call it the Day of Youm-ul Ja’iza-the day of Great Reward.
