Poplar Baths is open for business!

Poplar Baths has re-opened to the public today (Monday 25 July) after nearly 30 years since it closed its doors.

The grade II listed building has been lovingly restored to its former glory with a couple of new additions.

The building, which has been refurbished by Guildmore, boasts an Art Deco entrance lobby, sports hall, new pools and a café.

Poplar Baths Leisure Centre which will be run by GLL, supports a varied programme of sports and activities and aims to enhance the health and quality of life for local people of all ages. This includes activities for children and adults such as badminton, gymnastics, netball, swimming and holiday programmes.

As well as a 25m swimming pool and learner pool, there is a Sports England standard sports hall, large studio and gym which will have ladies sessions.

This new leisure facility has been designed to reduce energy use and achieves a BREEAM ‘Very Good’ standard.

Liaising closely with Tower Hamlets Council and Historic England, Guildmore has worked with Pringle Richards Sharratt Architects and succeeded in transforming the 1930s Grade II listed building into a striking London landmark and destination.

Mayor of Tower Hamlets, John Biggs said: “I am thrilled that such a prestigious building has been brought back into use and will benefit the local community by providing a first class swimming pool and sports activities. Many people have memories of using the baths and are pleased to see it back in use for new generations to enjoy.”

Claire Brady of Historic England said: “We are delighted to have been part of the journey to bring this ‘Building at Risk’ and important piece of Poplar back to life.

Thanks to such a fantastic project, people will now be able to enjoy its facilities as well as appreciate the history and value of such a magnificent building.”

“We have a lot of experience of managing heritage assets sensitively and are proud to be entrusted with the magnificent Poplar Baths.”

The London Marathon Charitable Trust has provided a grant of £15,000 towards the purchase and installation of a Poolpod that allows those who are less able to get in and out of the pool easily to have greater level of independence and dignity.

The council will be hosting an open day on Saturday 13 August at Poplar Baths where residents can have a tour of the new leisure centre and try out taster sports and activity sessions. The fun starts from 10am. 

The council is also running a project to collect memories from residents who used the facility previously. This is your opportunity to share your experience and become a part of its history.
