New Super Market fire completely extinguished after 27 hrs

The fire at the Dhaka New Super Market was fully extinguished on Sunday morning, according to Fire Service and Civil Defence.

Fire Service’s Polashi barrack fire station in-charge warehouse inspector Md Al Masud said, “The fire was completely put out around 9am.”

The market is expected to be handed over to its owners and management committee today, said Md Akhtaruzzaman, assistant director (Dhaka) of Fire Service and Civil Defence.

Fire Service’s acting official Shahjahan Shikder said, “We managed to bring the inferno under our control on Saturday. But smokes were found from the burnt shops which were successfully doused this morning.”

A total of 31 firefighting units and teams of Bangladesh Army, Navy and Air Force were working to bring the massive blaze under control which originated around 5:40am on Saturday at the market. At least 19 people fell sick from the heavy smoke. Of them, 13 are firefighters, one fire service officer, two volunteers, two Ansar members and one Navy sergeant.
