Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) has welcomed their very first test tube baby.
The baby was born through a Caesarean section at 9:30am on Tuesday under the supervision of Dr. Jesmin Banu, Chairman of the Department of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, said BSMMU’s Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Md Sharfuddin Ahmed, who was present during the surgical procedure.
The parents of this baby hail from Barishal and struggled with infertility for 13 years. They first learned about their condition eight years ago but didn’t get any successful treatments. They were never recommended In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) either.
In 2022, they turned to the BSMMU’s Infertility Department. After some thorough check-ups and when the time was right, they were advised to try ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection), a form of IVF that involves injecting live sperm into a person’s eggs in a laboratory.
Finally, in February 2023, the mom became pregnant, and after regular checkups, the test tube baby was born .
A team of 17 doctors and 5 nurses performed the Caesarean section under the supervision of Dr. Jesmin Banu.
