Bangladeshi-origin police officer among 4 killed in New York shooting

Four people, including a Bangladeshi-American NYPD officer, were killed in a mass shooting at an office building in Midtown Manhattan on Monday evening. The gunman later died by suicide, according to authorities.

The suspect, identified as Shane Tamura, 38, of Las Vegas, entered the building on Park Avenue carrying an M4 rifle and opened fire. Surveillance footage showed him exiting a parked BMW, walking into the building, and immediately shooting an off-duty NYPD officer and a woman seeking cover.

The victim officer was Didarul Islam, 36, a native of Bangladesh who had served in the New York Police Department for three and a half years. Islam was off duty at the time of the attack. He is survived by his pregnant wife and two young children.

NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch paid tribute to the fallen officer, stating:

“He lived and died like a hero.”

The gunman continued his rampage inside the building, shooting randomly in the lobby. He then took an elevator to the 33rd floor, where he entered a real estate firm, fatally shot another individual, and then took his own life.

In total, four people were killed, and one person was critically injured and remains hospitalized.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams commented on the tragedy:

“Five innocent people were targeted in a horrifying act of violence.”

Police later recovered a rifle case, revolver, magazines, and ammunition from Tamura’s vehicle. Authorities confirmed that Tamura had a history of mental health issues, though the motive behind the attack remains unclear.

Eyewitnesses described terrifying scenes. Jessica Chen, who was attending a meeting on the second floor, said:

“We heard rapid gunshots from below. We rushed into a conference room and barricaded the door. Everyone was terrified.”
She added that she texted her parents to tell them she loved them.

Emergency services, including the New York Fire Department, responded to the scene around 6:30 p.m. local time. TV footage showed people evacuating the building with their hands in the air. Offices inside the building include Blackstone and the Consulate General of Ireland.

Commissioner Tisch confirmed that two NYPD teams had been privately hired for security in the building and were present during the incident.

Following the attack, the city’s Emergency Management Department issued alerts regarding road closures, traffic congestion, and transit disruptions in the area.

This shooting comes despite a downward trend in gun violence across New York City. According to AP, data shows that through July 2025, the city had recorded its lowest rates of gun-related violence and homicide in decades.
