NID, voter registration services for expats launched in Canada

The Bangladesh Election Commission has launched voter registration and smart NID services for expatriates in Canada, allowing them to be included in the voter list and collect NIDs through the Bangladesh Mission.

The inauguration was held on Thursday at the Bangladesh High Commission in Ottawa, with Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin as the chief guest.

Speaking at the event, the CEC said that democracy is inclusive only when citizens, regardless of location, can exercise their voting rights. He also highlighted the important role of expatriates in the country’s development through remittances, investments, and technology transfer.

During the ceremony, the CEC handed over smart NID cards to some registered expatriates. Acting High Commissioner Kazi Russell Parvez and Deputy High Commissioner Dewan Hosne Ayub were also present.

The services are now available at the Bangladesh High Commission in Ottawa and the Consulate General in Toronto. The initiative is seen as a major step in ensuring the democratic rights of nearly one crore Bangladeshi citizens living abroad.
