
At least six people were killed and three others injured in separate road accidents here in the district today.
Five of the victims were killed when a passenger-carrying CNG-run auto-rickshaw was hit by a bus on the Sunamganj-Sylhet road in the Jalalpur area of Chhatak upazila around noon.
Among the deceased, one was identified as Yusuf Ali, 55, son of Hashem Ali of Terjalal village under Tahirpur upazila.
Police and eyewitnesses said the auto-rickshaw was heading to Sylhet from Sunamganj, while a bus of Rifat Paribahan was coming from the opposite direction. The vehicles collided head-on, leaving the auto-rickshaw crushed under the bus.
Two passengers died on the spot, while three others succumbed to their injuries at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital.
Officer-in-Charge of Joykalas Highway Police Station Abdul Motaleb said the injured were rescued and sent to the hospital.
In a separate incident, an unidentified woman was killed after being run over by a speeding bus while crossing the Dirai-Madanpur road in Sunamganj Sadar upazila.
Additional Police Superintendent Sujon Sarkar said two people died at the scene and three at the hospital in the Chhatak accident, while another person was killed in the separate incident.
