A Dhaka court on Wednesday ordered former Chief Justice ABM Khairul Haque to be shown arrested in a case filed with Banani Police Station under charges of attempted murder and the Explosives Act.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Arifur Rahman passed the order following a virtual hearing.

Police had applied on July 2 to show Khairul Haque arrested in the case. The hearing, initially scheduled for July 6, was deferred due to the unavailability of case records.

Khairul Haque has been in jail since his arrest from his Dhanmondi residence on July 24 last year.

The High Court on May 17 directed authorities not to show him arrested or harass him in any case without specific legal grounds.

After obtaining bail in seven cases on May 23, he was shown arrested in a separate murder case filed with Jatrabari Police Station. The High Court granted him bail on June 30 and the Appellate Division upheld the order on July 2.

He remains on bail in eight previous cases, including those related to the July uprising, the alleged forgery of the caretaker government verdict and five cases filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission. Despite that, police have now shown him arrested in the new case.
