Ex-MP Jakob shown arrested over attempted murder during July uprising

A Dhaka court on Monday showed former lawmaker Abdullah Al Islam Jakob arrested in an attempted murder case linked to the July uprising.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam passed the order after police submitted an application seeking to show him arrested in the case.

Earlier, Investigation Officer of the case and Sub-Inspector Md Ashraful Doula of Mirpur Model Police Station filed the application.

According to the case statement, Rifat joined a peaceful protest in front of Mirpur Girls’ Ideal School and College in Mirpur on 4 August 2024.

Rifat sustained a gunshot wound, allegedly inflicted by the accused, above his right knee. After nearly a month of treatment, doctors removed the bullet from his leg through surgery.

Police said Jakob, an active leader of the banned Awami League, needed to be shown arrested in the case for the sake of a fair investigation.

Meanwhile, police also filed another application seeking to show Jacob arrested in a separate attempted murder case filed with Vatara Police Station in the capital.

The court, however, kept the order on that application pending.

Jacob was arrested by the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) from the Gulshan area in the capital on 1 October 2024 and has remained in jail since then.
