Police have detained three student leaders including Mahdi Hasan, member of secretary of the Habiganj ditrict Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, as they were preparing for a demonstration.
Sources confirmed that they were preparing to organize a rally against load shedding, rising electricity prices, gas shortages, and soaring commodity prices.
The detentions took place around 5:00 PM on Monday (August 17) at the Court Mosque premises in Habiganj town, where protesters had gathered under the banner of “General Students and Citizens.”
According to local sources, students and local residents began assembling at the Court Mosque premises in the afternoon to stage a protest rally against power outages, utility price hikes, and inflation. As the group prepared to march following the Asr prayer, police intervened and detained Mahdi Hasan alongside two others before bringing them to Habiganj Sadar Police Station.
Jahidul Haq, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Habiganj Sadar Police Station, stated that the detentions were made to prevent potential unrest and ensure public safety surrounding the rally.
Police have not immediately disclosed whether formal charges or cases have been filed against the three detainees.
