A 15-year-old madrasa student was killed and three others were seriously injured after a bus rammed a CNG-run auto-rickshaw in Jaintapur, Sylhet, on Monday.
The accident occurred around 11:30am in the Chiknagul area, in front of the main gate of Sylhet Gas Fields Limited on the Sylhet-Tamabil Highway.
The deceased was identified as Nusrat Jahan Tasnim, a resident of Dhalai Para in Dhaka’s Jatrabari area. The injured are Mohammad Ali, 30, Sumaiya Akter, 26, and Kulsum Begum, 55.
According to police and locals, the group had travelled from Jatrabari to Sylhet for a visit and was heading to Jaflong in a CNG-run auto-rickshaw when a Sylhet-bound gate-lock bus hit the vehicle near the gas field.
The auto-rickshaw was badly damaged and its passengers were thrown onto the road. Nusrat died on the spot.
Locals rescued the injured and took them to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital.
The accident briefly disrupted traffic on the Sylhet-Tamabil Highway, causing congestion on both sides of the road. Traffic later returned to normal following intervention by highway police.
Police recovered Nusrat’s body and sent it to the Osmani Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy after preparing an inquest report.
Jaintapur Highway Police Station Sub-Inspector Mohammad Zakir confirmed the incident, saying the two vehicles involved have been taken into police custody and legal action will follow.
