Salman Shah murder: CID seeks 7-Day remand of Don

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has sought a seven-day remand of actor Ashraful Haque Don in the murder case of popular film star Salman Shah.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jewel Rana fixed Thursday (August 27) for hearing the remand plea, with Don present in court.

CID Inspector and investigation officer Mujibur Rahman sought the remand, saying interrogation in custody could help uncover the circumstances surrounding Salman Shah’s death and identify and arrest others allegedly involved.

The CID also said Don’s interrogation could reveal the whereabouts of his alleged associates and clarify how and at whose instigation he allegedly attempted to flee abroad despite a travel ban.

Immigration police detained Don at Dhaka airport on August 9. He was later sent to jail pending completion of the investigation.

Salman Shah died on September 6, 1996. Initially treated as an unnatural death, the case was later ordered to be treated as a murder case following a revision petition by the victim’s family. His maternal uncle, Mohammad Alamgir, subsequently filed the murder case with Ramna Police under Sections 302 and 34 of the Penal Code.

The case names Salman’s wife Samira Haque, businessman and former film producer Aziz Mohammad, Don and several others as accused, along with unidentified persons. The complainant alleges that the accused conspired to kill the actor.

Salman Shah’s death has remained a long-standing mystery in Bangladesh’s film industry, with his family having repeatedly questioned the circumstances of his death.
