Jamaat-e-Islami will advance its fight for “restoring people’s legitimate rights” and for implementing the July Charter with the people’s active participation in the street movements, said the Islamic party’s chief Shafiqur Rahman on Saturday.

He claimed that the fight would continue as the “BNP government has taken a stance against the July Charter and the February referendum,” where people overwhelmingly backed the charter.

Speaking at a members’ council at Momo Inn Hotel in Bogura city, the Opposition Leader said the people had entrusted Jamaat with the duty to serve as the “guardian of people’s dignity and honour.”

Jamaat activists must work to fulfil this duty with “resolute faith, unshakable determination and huge courage,” Shafiqur said at the gathering. Harnessing these qualities, the activists “must lead from the front” in the struggle for clinching people’s legitimate rights, he added.

Shafiqur said that the upcoming local government elections bear huge significance for the nation and the country. Jamaat activists must take all possible preparations from now for contesting the elections, he said.

Shafiqur also noted that Bogura is a “historic bastion for Islamic movements,” being the birthplace for martyr Abdul Malek, Fakir Abdur Rahman and Professor Maulana Tayeb Ali. In the future too, Bogura will play a leading role in the “fight for people’s freedom,” the Opposition Leader hoped.

The multiple crisis of the district will also be resolved in the future, he further hoped.

At the conference, discussions were held on the organisation’s activities, the responsibilities of its senior members, and the role of general members in the current political and social context.

Before the conference, the Ameer of Jamaat visited the grave of Shaheed Abdul Malek in Dhunat upazila of Bogura district. He later held a private exchange of views with members of the martyr’s family and laid the foundation stone of the Shaheed Abdul Malek Welfare Foundation building.
