Zakir Naik extradition request under discussion: Malaysian PM

Malaysia has discussed the possible extradition of controversial Islamic preacher Zakir Naik to India, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has said.

In an interview with Indian media outlet NDTV, Anwar said the issue was raised during his bilateral meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday (September 12).

“Certainly, these issues were part of the discussions,” Anwar said, adding that the matter had been kept confidential in the interests of both countries. He said Malaysia has placed the issue among its priorities as part of efforts to strengthen mutual trust and bilateral relations.

However, Anwar stressed that Malaysia must uphold the rule of law while considering India’s extradition request.

“We understand their request, but we have to proceed very carefully,” he said, emphasising the need to respect the rule of law while also considering the importance of bilateral ties.

Naik, who is wanted by Indian authorities over allegations including money laundering and hate speech, has been living in Malaysia as a permanent resident since leaving India in 2016.

India has repeatedly sought his extradition. Malaysia, however, has said it would cooperate only if India provides specific and credible evidence and the request meets legal requirements.

Naik’s extradition has remained a sensitive issue in India-Malaysia relations, with Kuala Lumpur previously maintaining that any decision must follow due legal process.
