Rampal plant’s power generation halves after second unit shuts down

Power generation at the Rampal coal-fired power plant fell by half on Sunday noon after its second unit shut down due to a technical glitch.

The plant’s power supply to the national grid fell to 600-megawatt from 1,100-megawatt due to the technical issue, which would take at least four days to resolve, said Anwarul Azim, general manager at the power plant.

Repair works had already started at the second unit, he told reporters, without specifying the nature of the technical fault or the reason behind it.

The abrupt supply suspension of at least 500-megawatt electricity would likely continue a power crisis in the country even as the second unit of Adani’s power plant in India’s Godda resumed operations around Sunday noon, after staying offline for nearly four days.

Electricity supply from the second unit of the Indian power plant was expected to rise to 750-megawatt by Sunday evening. The two units of the power plant generally supply 1,500-megawatt of power.
