Malaysia and Tower Hamlets strengthen global ties

Tower Hamlets welcomed a delegation from Malaysia as part of efforts to strengthen international ties and drive investment, collaboration and economic growth opportunities.

The visit follows an official delegation to the borough in 2025 by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

The Mayor of Tower Hamlets, Lutfur Rahman welcomed H.E. Dato’ Indera Dr Azfar Mohamad Mustafar, High Commissioner of Malaysia, today to a tour of the borough which has the third highest economic output in the UK.

Tower Hamlets is also home to Canary Wharf and Aldgate East – two of London’s most important international business hubs.

The latest coup to Canary Wharf was the decision by JP Morgan Chase to build its new headquarters in the borough unlocking £9.9bn to the UK economy over six years and create around 7,800 construction jobs.

The visit provided an opportunity to discuss support for Malaysian residents, community development, investment opportunities and stronger links between Malaysia and local communities across the borough.

Lutfur Rahman, Executive Mayor of Tower Hamlets, said:

“From Canary Wharf to our vibrant communities, Tower Hamlets is a borough built on international connections and ambition.”

“I am delighted to welcome this delegation from Malaysia, led by H.E.  Dato’ Indera Dr Azfar Mohamad Mustafar, as we explore new opportunities to deepen the cultural and trade ties that enrich both our communities.

“At the local level, I am delighted to announce a council-led initiative to hold our first-ever East Asian Heritage Month early next year, to recognise and celebrate the diversity of our borough, not least our local Malaysian community.”

The UK and Malaysia share a growing bilateral trading relationship, valued at approximately £6.4 billion to £6.5 billion in 2025.

In 2017, the UK was Malaysia’s fourth-largest trading partner in the European Union.

H.E. Dato’ Indera Dr Azfar Mohamad Mustafar, High Commissioner of Malaysia to the United Kingdom, said:

“It is a pleasure to meet Mayor Lutfur Rahman at the Tower Hamlets Council, along with esteemed officers and cabinet members.

“This visit reflects the enduring, deep-rooted and positive relationship between Malaysia and the United Kingdom.

“It is at the community level where these international ties truly thrive. Tower Hamlets is a vibrant, diverse, and dynamic borough.

“We look forward to building upon our strong existing relationship while exploring new, mutually beneficial avenues of collaboration in areas such as community development, education, culture, and local enterprise.”

“By working closely together, we can create meaningful opportunities that benefit both the Malaysian diaspora and the wider communities of Tower Hamlets.”
