BNP candidate Eliza Zaman has been elected unopposed to the vacant reserved women’s seat (Seat No. 23) in the 13th Jatiya Sangsad, the Election Commission (EC) announced on Monday morning (November 2).

The EC confirmed her election through a notice issued by its Secretariat, signed by Md Moin Uddin Khan, joint secretary of the Election Management-2 Division.

According to the notice, Eliza Zaman, nominated by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and its alliance, submitted her nomination papers by the stipulated deadline of 4:00pm on October 26 for the by-election to the vacant seat.

Her nomination papers were scrutinised in line with the announced schedule and declared valid.

The notice further said that as she did not withdraw her candidacy by the deadline of 4:00pm on Sunday (November 1), her name was published in the final list of candidates under Section 12(1) of the Jatiya Sangsad (Reserved Women’s Seats) Election Act, 2004.

The seat fell vacant after BNP Chairman and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman instructed Ferdousi Ahmed Misty to resign following allegations linking her to an attack, looting and vandalism at the Radha MCH-FP Centre in Mirpur, Dhaka.

After her resignation, the Parliament Secretariat declared the seat vacant, prompting the Election Commission to announce the by-election schedule.
