ST JOHN’S, Antigua and Barbuda – The 2026 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) opened in Antigua and Barbuda on November 3, with leaders calling for stronger partnerships between governments and businesses to drive economic growth and prosperity for the Commonwealth’s 2.7 billion people.
His Majesty King Charles III, Head of the Commonwealth, joined leaders at the opening ceremony, which launched discussions under the theme, “Accelerating Partnerships and Investment for a Prosperous Commonwealth”.
The meeting is the first under Commonwealth Secretary-General Hon Shirley Botchwey, who called for a new approach to cooperation, bringing governments, businesses and investors together to deliver practical solutions to shared challenges.
A key priority is mobilising finance for more than US$52 billion in investment-ready projects across 28 developing Commonwealth countries, with particular emphasis on climate finance, renewable energy, skills development and trade.
King Charles III described the Commonwealth as an “unparalleled opportunity” for countries to work together amid growing global challenges, including conflict, climate change and economic uncertainty.
Antigua and Barbuda’s Prime Minister, Rt Hon Gaston Browne, described the summit as a “consequential CHOGM”, urging leaders to choose cooperation over division and turn commitments into meaningful results.
Discussions will also address youth empowerment, given that 60 per cent of Commonwealth citizens are under 30, as well as democratic resilience, sustainable financing and the challenges facing small states.
The summit will conclude with a leaders’ communiqué outlining commitments to strengthen cooperation, build resilience and expand opportunities across the Commonwealth’s 56 member countries.
